One of the highlights of our recent trip through Asia was sitting down with investment legend and bestselling author Jim Rogers at his home in Singapore. Actually, we were the ones sitting down, while Jim Rogers was getting his morning workout on an exercise bike in his garden. By the end of the 52-minute (!) conversation, we were pleasantly surprised by his impressive fitness — Jim kept a good pace and never stopped for the duration of the interview which lasted almost an hour! As for the conversation itself, Jim Rogers revealed to us:

Where he sees the best investment opportunities currently.

How to take advantage of these opportunities as an investor.

Why Myanmar offers great potential to investors (and how to invest there).

His take on China, India, Argentina and other emerging markets.

What has surprised him after five years of living in Singapore.

Of course, Jim Rogers is not only a great investor but also a prolific author. We have all benefited from his wonderful writings over time and are fortunate that he’s got a new book out this year. It’s titled Street Smarts: Adventures on the Road and in the Markets. Watch the video below to benefit from Jim’s views and wisdom.

Video: Jim Rogers Shares His Investment Secrets and Ideas

[Sorry, this video is no longer available.]

Jim Rogers, born in 1942, started in business at the ripe age of five, picking up bottles at baseball games. He won a scholarship to Yale, where he was coxswain on the crew team. After graduating from Yale, Jim Rogers attended Balliol College at Oxford. After serving in the army, he started working on Wall Street. He then co-founded, along with George Soros, the Quantum Fund, an investment firm following a global macro investment approach. During the next ten years, the partnership returned 4,000+%, while the S&P 500 Index gained less than 50%. Rogers retired at 37 years of age, throwing himself into investment and other projects. He continued to manage his personal portfolio and served as a professor of finance at the Columbia Business School. He also moderated The Dreyfus Roundtable and The Profit Motive. He laid the foundation for his longtime goal, a motorcycle journey around the globe: 100,000+ miles across all continents. The trip served as inspiration for Jim Rogers’s book, Investment Biker in 1994. During his planning for the Millennium Adventure in 1999-2001, Jim Rogers remained an expert voice on investing at Worth, CNBC, and other media outlets. He remains a contributor to Fox News, Worth, and other media properties.

We’ve just come back from Singapore and Hong Kong where we’ve met with dozens of great value investors. We’ve met seasoned investors as well as start-up managers, deep value bargain hunters as well as investors looking for great businesses at attractive prices. Three things really stood out to us:

1) Asia is a fruitful hunting ground for value investors:

There are about 15,000 equities in Asia excluding Japan. The majority of these equities are small-caps, many of which have no analyst coverage. And while the opportunity set is dominated by family-controlled companies, there are plenty of examples of good governance and capital allocation. As elsewhere, family-control can actually be a filter for good long-term business performance.

2) Asia is not a monolith:

Investors in the U.S. or Europe tend to treat Asia, or for that matter, all of the emerging markets in the same way. The mindset is often that if a stock is quantitatively cheap, there must be something “wrong” with it in terms of corporate governance or accounting, or otherwise. Indeed, David Webb’s great resource on corporate governance in Hong Kong highlights the many issues investors still face, even in one of Asia’s most developed equity markets. As a result, foreign fund flows often tend to follow the stupefying “risk on/risk off” pattern, without much regard for underlying differences among individual companies. This leaves long term oriented, bottom-up investors in a great position to exploit the resulting share price fluctuations.

3) Still plenty of undervalued equities to be found:

Despite the run-up in many Asian equity markets, the investors we’ve spoken to still had plenty of great ideas to talk about. We will share with you some of these ideas on this blog over the next few weeks. And of course, there will be plenty more great ideas at Emerging Value Summit 2013 on April 9 and 10.

Over the next days and weeks, we will bring you exclusive interviews and other content from value investors that we met in Asia as well as other emerging markets investors from around the world. Stay tuned!
